This course will focus 25% on lectures and 75% on labs. University of Alabama at Birmingham (Birmingham, Alabama) developed a three-credit course for engineers and technicians on the energy and efficiency of hybrid and electric vehicles.

An Overview of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) Technologies - NSF Grant No.Louis, Missouri) modified their Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications courses to include Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technologies. Lewis and Clark Community College (Godfrey, Illinois/St.Modeling Mechanical Subsystems of the Hybrid Electric Transmission - NSF Grant No.Major Concepts of Hybrid Electric Powertrain Systems - NSF Grant No.Introduction to Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Engineering - NSF Grant No.Developing a Control Algorithm Based on Vehicle Motion Requirements - NSF Grant No.Lawrence Technological University (Southfield, Michigan) developed HEV based modules for two mechatronics courses.Examples of BEVs on the market today are the Ford Focus EV, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi MiEV, and the Tesla Model S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, “100 miles is sufficient for more than 90% of all household vehicle trips in the United States".
#HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE FULL#
Although some BEVs, such as the Tesla Model S, have a range as high as 265 miles on a full charge, most are limited to around 100 miles per charge. However, BEVs must be charged from a plug, have a shorter driving range, and expensive batteries. They emit zero emissions from the vehicle and are more energy efficient than HEVs. Video explains the components in HEVs, the different types and levels, and how they function.īEVs run only on electric power stored in the batteries and do not have an engine. For more information on types and levels of HEVs, visit their respective pages in the menu on the left. The cost aspect may be offset in years to come due to higher gas prices and improved HEV technologies. They are classified by type and level. Advantages of HEVs are improved fuel economy, efficiency, and reduced emissions. HEVs are vehicles propelled by more than one power source such as an engine and electric motor.
